Come to the WRI conference "Globalising Nonviolence"

War Resisters' International conference
23-27 July 2006
Paderborn, Germany

Are you interested in both nonviolence and globalisation?

  • Are you campaigning against war?
  • Are you involved in nonviolent direct action or curious to learn more?

The War Resisters' International conference Globalising Nonviolence will be a great opportunity to meet activists from all over the world, to get to know what makes them tick, and to see how you can help each make another world possible. Around the world, a movement of movements is converging. This movement seeks to counterpose the perspective and values of people's power to those of global financial institutions, transnational corporations or governments. This is a movement of globalisation from below.

WRI believes that this movement of movements has a major role to play in this globalisation from below. Hence the theme of our upcoming international conference - Globalising Nonviolence.

Conference discussions will:

  • Analyse the contemporary situation of economic, cultural and political globalisation. How are capitalist globalisation and militarism related?
  • Develop strategies for nonviolent resistance towards the unjust aspects of globalisation. How do we create nonviolent social change?
  • Bring together people from the globalisation critical movement and WRI's network of pacifists and anti-militarists for mutual exchange of ideas on nonviolent opportunities for resistance.
  • Strengthen networks and create new links between activists from all over the world.

Conference structure

Each day of the conference will begin with a short plenary session on the day's major topic. Then participants will divide into theme and activity groups, where the same people will meet every day during the conference to discuss a specific theme in depth. The afternoons will include one-time workshops and plenary sessions.

Come to the WRI conference "Globalising Nonviolence"

Paderborn, 23-27 July 2006

Dear Friends!

WRI's next Triennial, Globalising Nonviolence, will begin in about one month from now. The organising team has been working very hard on building this conference, and on making it fascinating and attractive. However, as of now, only very few participants have registered to the conference. So WE NEED YOUR HELP!

First of all, if you still haven't, please consider coming to our conference yourself. Also, if you have friends and fellow activists, working on resisting economic globalisation or promoting peace and nonviolence, who would be interested in attending the conference, please invite them to come. You can also spread invitations to the Globalising Nonviolence conference over the electronic and physical mailing lists of WRI affiliates and of other organisations you are active with.

Below is a sample letter of invitation, which you can use to attract potential participants to the conference. If you need any additional information about the conference itself, there is quite a lot of it on the conference website, and, on top of that, we would be glad to answer any questions that might arise.

Are you interested in both nonviolence and globalisation?

Are you campaigning against war?

Are you involved in nonviolent direct action or curious to learn more?

Do you want to share your knowledge and ideas with other activists from all over the world?

We would like to invite you to the Globalising Nonviolence conference, organised by the War Resisters’ International.

The title of the conference, Globalising Nonviolence, has a triple meaning: it aims at

  • making nonviolence more central in the global movement of resistance to war and economic domination,
  • adapting nonviolent analysis and strategy to the global threats, global wars and global actors we face today, and
  • consolidating, reviving and expanding the antimilitarist, nonviolent, global network connected with WRI.
This conference will be a great opportunity to meet activists from all over the world, to get to know what makes them tick, and to see how you can help each make another world possible.
It will feature speakers from all five continents and a rich variety of workshops, to which you are warmly invited to add your own workshop too!

It will feature in-depth discussion of theoretical and practical issues – from studying about militarism in culture and the economy, through developing the theory and strategy of nonviolent struggle, to such issues as developing a campaign against war profiteers and practical training in nonviolence.

It will also feature a diverse cultural programme and a host of opportunities for social interaction.

The conference will take place between 23 and 27 July, near Paderborn, Germany. Further information about the conference is available at: http://www.globalisingnonviolence.org. To register you can go directly to the online registration form or write us at: registration@globalisingnonviolence.org.

See you there!

Thanks a lot,

The Triennial Organising Committee.
