Imprisoned pacifist blogger Maikel Nabil Sanad

I have learned that pacifist and conscientious objector Maikel Nabil Sanad, who has been on a hunger strike since 23 August - now for more than 85 days - is not being released, although the appeal court on 11 October annulled the sentence of three years' imprisonment passed down by the military court on 10 April 2011. On 18 October, the military court ordered to send Maikel Nabil Sanad to a psychiatric hospital for examination - an attempt at pathologising political dissent, which the hospital refused to perform.

Maikel Nabil: I’m Still Boycotting the Military Judicature and I Bear the Consequences

Related peace activists:

History repeats itself, the same way I objected to compulsory military service last year, this year I boycott litigation before the military officers.

Mr Officers… I say Mr Officers and not Mr Judge, because the judge before anything has to have the characteristic of independence, whereas military officers are a branch of the executive authority. That’s why you are an officer, not a judge, no matter what names, titles or descriptions you were called.

No to the pathologisation of imprisoned blogger Maikel Nabil Sanad. Release imprisoned blogger immediately

I have learned that pacifist and conscientious objector Maikel Nabil Sanad, who has been on a hunger strike since 23 August - now for more than 60 days - is not being released, although the appeal court annulled the sentence of three years' imprisonment passed down by the military court on 10 April 2011. Instead, the military court gave order on 18 October to transfer Maikel Nabil Sanad to a psychiatric hospital for examination.

I protest strongly against this attempt to pathologise criticism of the military and of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces.

EGYPT: Imprisoned blogger Maikel Nabil Sanad to be re-tried, but not released. De-facto death sentence after 50 days of hunger strike

Related peace activists:
Maikel Nabil SanadMaikel Nabil SanadWar Resisters' International is extremely concerned about the life of imprisoned pacifist blogger Maikel Nabil Sanad. Although the military appeal court declared the initial sentence of three years' imprisonment void, and ordered a re-trial of the blogger, who has been on hunger strike since 23 August, the court did not order his release pending re-trial. While today's judgement looks positive on first view, it is a de-facto death sentence for pacifist blogger Maikel Nabil Sanad, as he might not survive long enough to see his re-trial, which could be in one week or even up to one month.

Maikel Nabil Sanad: Hunger Strike isn’t Suicide

Related peace activists:

When I started my hunger strike since nearly 40 days, many people tried to convince me to end my strike... Of the most opinions I heard was the religious point of view, which is summarized for: the hunger strike is a type of suicide, the one who commits suicide is an infidel, the church doesn’t make a prayer on strikers if they died, their destiny is eternal torture... It’s funny that the religious Christians and religious Muslims, together, had the same point of view.
