Sentencing of pacifist blogger Maikel Nabil Sanad to two years in prison

I have learned that pacifist and conscientious objector Maikel Nabil Sanad, who has been on a hunger strike since 23 August - now for more than 155 days - has been sentenced by a military court to two years' imprisonment on 14 December 2011.

Maikel Nabil Sanad has been sentenced for his writings criticising the military, especially his blog post "The army and the people never were one hand". Recently, military officials have reportedly asked him to apologise to the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces for his writings but he refused.

I have learned that pacifist and conscientious objector Maikel Nabil Sanad, who has been on a hunger strike since 23 August - now for more than 85 days - is not being released, although the appeal court on 11 October annulled the sentence of three years' imprisonment passed down by the military court on 10 April 2011. On 18 October, the military court ordered to send Maikel Nabil Sanad to a psychiatric hospital for examination - an attempt at pathologising political dissent, which the hospital refused to perform.

At the hearing on 13 November, none of the witnesses called on 1 November showed up. Meanwhile, Maikel Nabil Sanad passed the 80th day of his hunger strike, surviving on fruit and dairy juices.

In October, War Resisters' International again visited Egypt, in support of imprisoned pacifist blogger Maikel Nabil Sanad, who is on hunger strike since 23 August 2011. The objective was to be present during the appeal hearing at the military court on 11 October 2011, and to show solidarity.
